Read Active is an iPhone app that features a collection of interactive books and short stories by multiple authors.
Concept
The app is designed to be somewhere between a book and a game: it looks and reads like a book, but plays like a game. The written word of each story is used as the narrative as well as the map. The lines of text are laid out like a path that the reader has to follow. The mobile device itself is also used as a part of the story, which the reader has to physically rotate to follow along.
This method of storytelling can be used as a template and applied to more stories in the future. Digital publishing is a unique platform and the technology of it opens up a whole world of possibilities. This app plays with the potential of touchscreen gaming and new ways to use the mobile platform. But most importantly, it pushes the boundaries of what is even considered a book.
